10 Foods You Can (and Can't) Put in an Electric Composter

Short answer: common fruit scraps, vegetable trimmings, coffee grounds, bread, rice, pasta, eggshells, and ordinary leftovers may fit some electric composters—but there is no universal food list. MB4 is a dry-and-grind food recycler; MB12 uses a microbial fermentation process. Check the model column below before loading anything, drain excess liquid, and remove packaging, hard pits, shells, and bones as directed.

Never put these materials in MB4

  • Hard bones and hard shells: including large bones, shellfish shells, coconut shells, and walnut shells.
  • Hard pits and stones: including avocado, peach, mango, and similarly hard pits.
  • Free liquid: soup, beverages, and excess water should not be poured into the bucket.
  • Cooking oil or a grease-heavy load: drain accepted solids first.
  • Non-food items: plastic, glass, metal, foil, cutlery, packaging, stickers, produce ties, and other contaminants.

For MB12, the current public product information specifically says to avoid large bones and hard woody plant stems. For hard shells, hard pits, tea packaging, and any other item not clearly covered, check the current MB12 user guide or written support before loading it.

Why the MB4 and MB12 food lists differ

MB4 heats, dries, and grinds accepted scraps into dry Moreborn Grounds. MB12 maintains a larger microbial fermentation process with mixing and grinding support. A material that can be dried in a short batch is not automatically appropriate for a living microbial chamber, and an ingredient named for MB12 is not automatically approved for MB4.

1. Fruit scraps and peels

Soft fruit scraps are a routine input for both product workflows. Remove produce stickers, rubber bands, and packaging. Keep hard pits such as avocado, peach, and mango stones out of MB4. For MB12, verify hard-pit rules in the current guide rather than assuming a larger chamber can process them.

2. Vegetable trimmings

Peels, ends, and ordinary vegetable preparation scraps are appropriate examples for both models. Drain very wet material. Hard woody stems are excluded from MB12’s public guidance; dense pieces should be prepared only as the model instructions direct.

3. Coffee grounds

Coffee grounds are named for both models. Let excess brewing water drain first. Paper filters or pods are separate materials: add them only if the exact guide covers that material, and never put plastic or metal pod components into either machine.

4. Tea leaves

Loose tea leaves may fit the MB4 routine, but a tea bag can contain plastic mesh, string, a paper tag, adhesive, or a metal staple. Remove all packaging unless the model-specific instructions explicitly accept it. The current public MB12 information does not provide enough detail for a blanket yes, so confirm before loading.

5. Bread

MB4 can handle ordinary bread scraps within its current food and fill guidance; MB12’s product information lists bread. Avoid loading a dense bucket of only one dry or sticky ingredient. Mixed, balanced loads generally follow the intended kitchen-scrap use more closely than a single-material batch.

6. Cooked rice and pasta

Use drained rice and pasta in MB4 within its current guidance. MB12’s public information includes cooked food. Remove free sauce, oil, foil, ties, and utensils. Break up dense clumps if the current guide calls for smaller pieces; do not pour an entire liquid dish into either unit.

7. Eggshells

MB4 lists eggshells among ordinary scraps. Use normal household quantities and keep the load within the fill line. The ingredient’s calcium content does not prove that the processed output is a safe, balanced, ready-to-use fertilizer. For MB12, confirm eggshell handling in its current guide.

8. Meat and fish scraps

MB12’s current product information lists meat and fish but excludes large bones. The public MB4 information checked for this update does not support a universal yes/no rule for every meat or fish scrap, so consult the MB4 guide and remove bones. Never infer food-safety sanitization from a completed cycle.

9. Dairy scraps

MB12’s public information lists dairy. Keep the load balanced and do not pour free liquid into the chamber. For MB4, check the current guide before processing dairy rather than copying MB12’s list. This is a good example of why brand-wide food lists are unreliable.

10. Mixed leftovers

“Leftovers” can contain accepted food plus oil, liquid, hard bones, pits, skewers, wrappers, or cutlery. Sort the plate before it reaches the bucket. MB4 can process ordinary drained scraps within its current guide; MB12 names leftovers as an example but still requires its model-specific preparation and feeding rules.

How to prepare a load

  1. Sort: remove packaging, stickers, ties, utensils, bones, hard shells, and hard pits as required.
  2. Drain: keep soup, drinks, free oil, and excess water out.
  3. Reduce large pieces: follow the exact model guide for cutting dense foods.
  4. Balance: avoid filling the entire machine with one unusually wet, oily, sticky, or hard material.
  5. Respect the fill line: capacity is not permission to compress material above the limit.
  6. Choose the output destination: do not assume dry grounds or pre-compost can go directly on plants.

What happens to the output?

MB4 produces dry, ground food residue. It is not finished compost and may need further composting, curing, an accepted organics destination, or compliant disposal. MB12 produces pre-compost from its microbial workflow; follow current harvesting, curing, mixing, and soil-use instructions before applying it.
