Which one is the best fit?
- Choose MB4 if you want a 4L batch, the lowest checked upfront price, a narrower counter footprint, and a straightforward dry-and-grind routine.
- Choose Lomi 3 if app control, multiple processing modes, and choosing between Express and Grow workflows matter enough to justify the higher price or subscription structure.
- Choose FoodCycler FC-50 if the Vitamix brand and a three-year standard warranty matter more than bucket size, and a 2.5L batch fits your routine.
If those tradeoffs do not make the decision obvious, measure seven days of eligible scraps before buying. Capacity mismatch is harder to fix than a missing app feature.
Capacity: compare the bucket you can actually fill
MB4’s published 4L bucket sits between Lomi 3 at 3L and the FC-50 at 2.5L. A larger bucket can reduce how often you need to run a cycle, but liters do not translate cleanly into a fixed number of people. Cooking habits, moisture, and the types of scraps you generate matter more than household size labels.
Use a marked container for one week. Exclude excess liquid, cooking oil, large hard bones, packaging, and anything prohibited by the model manual. Record the eligible volume after each day. If 2.5L regularly overflows, the FC-50’s stronger warranty may not make up for the extra cycles. If your daily amount stays well below 3L, exterior size, price, and workflow may matter more than capacity.
Counter space: width is not the whole footprint
MB4 is the narrowest at 8.9 inches wide, but it is deeper than Lomi 3. Lomi 3’s published 11 × 11 × 12-inch dimensions give it the smallest simple exterior volume of the three. FC-50 is the tallest and has a similar depth to MB4.
Before ordering, mark the full width and depth on the intended surface and check overhead lid clearance, ventilation space, outlet access, and the path used to remove the bucket. A machine that technically fits but cannot open comfortably will not remain convenient.
Cycles and controls
Moreborn MB4
MB4 focuses on a typical dry-and-grind cycle of about four hours, although wet or dense loads can change the timing. Its Dry & Dispose mode does not require the FPS microbial pack. A separate Composting mode can use FPS as part of a longer breakdown routine.
Lomi 3
Lomi 3 publishes two processing modes and a cleaning mode: Express at 3–6 hours, Grow at 11–17 hours, and Cleaning at 1.5 hours. It also publishes Wi-Fi and app control. This is the strongest feature set of the three, but only useful if you will actually select modes or use remote controls.
Vitamix FoodCycler FC-50
The FC-50 manual describes a three-stage Dry, Grind, Cool process lasting about 4–8 hours. It is the simplest comparison to MB4’s dry-and-grind purpose, but its published bucket is smaller. The manual also says to allow the cooling stage to complete before handling the output.
Output: dry material is not automatically mature compost
This is the most important category distinction. Heat-and-grind machines remove water and reduce particle size quickly. Mature compost is the result of biological decomposition and stabilization over time. Soil-like appearance alone does not prove maturity or make material suitable for direct contact with plant roots.
- MB4: Moreborn states that the result is dry, ground food residue called Moreborn Grounds. It is not finished compost and needs further composting or curing before garden use.
- Lomi 3: Lomi’s own product page calls Lomi Earth “technically ... pre-compost.” The same page makes stronger garden-use claims, so buyers should follow the current model instructions for quantity, curing, and soil use rather than treating the marketing term as a maturity test.
- FoodCycler FC-50: FoodCycler describes a fine, dry by-product after aeration, drying, and pulverizing. The checked sources do not provide a compost maturity test, so this comparison does not label it finished compost.
If your goal is only cleaner handling before municipal trash or organics pickup, mature compost may not matter. If the goal is garden use, read the output instructions before comparing prices.
